It will sound authoritative. It will sound like science.

It isn’t.

What AI is doing is repeating the dominant content on the internet about deck ventilation. That content was written by manufacturers who sell composite decking, distributors who sell vent products, lumber yards with decking lineups to move, and SEO content farms that copied manufacturer PDFs without checking a single number.

Nobody ran the math.

We did. As general contractors in Kansas City who have built and torn out hundreds of decks over 30 years of residential home improvement work, we ran the actual numbers. Here is what they show.


The Math Nobody Did

Take a standard 12×12 deck. 144 square feet. Board gaps of 3/16 inch, industry standard spacing for composite decking.

What the “requirement” says you need:
Using the 1/150 ratio: 0.96 square feet of Net Free Air.

What your deck already has:

Surface gaps alone, 3,502 linear inches of 3/16″ gaps running the length of the deck, produce 4.56 square feet of net free air.

Skirting gaps, 104 vertical board joints at 1/16″ across a standard 2-foot skirting height, produce an additional 1.08 square feet.

Total actual airflow: 5.64 square feet.

That is 587% more than the stated requirement. Nearly six times over.

Now here is what that $30 plastic vent from the hardware store adds:

A standard deck vent provides approximately 50 square inches of net free air, 0.35 square feet.

That is a 6% addition to airflow your deck already has in abundance. It is the equivalent of throwing a cup of water into a swimming pool and calling it hydration.


The Skirting Myth; Where the Most Vents Get Sold

This is where the narrative gets most deliberately misleading.

Walk into any lumber yard or distributor and tell them you want to skirt your deck. Within sixty seconds you will be told that solid skirting traps moisture, destroys your substructure, and voids your warranty. You need vented panels. You need plastic vent covers. You need cross-ventilation cut into every side.

Here is what they are not telling you.

Skirting boards are not airtight. They never are. Wood moves. Installation creates joints. Even what looks like a perfectly tight skirt has gaps at every vertical board joint, typically 1/16 of an inch or more. On a standard 12×12 deck perimeter that means 104 vertical joints, each 1/16″ wide across a 2-foot skirting height.

That produces 1.08 square feet of net free air.

From skirting that a homeowner or distributor would describe as solid.

The plastic vent they want to sell you adds 0.35 square feet to a system already delivering over a square foot of airflow through gaps the eye can barely see. It solves nothing. It addresses nothing. It exists to be sold.

The argument that solid skirting traps moisture is only true in one theoretical scenario, skirting installed with zero gaps, sealed edges, and no natural wood movement. That does not happen in the field. It cannot happen in the field. Wood expands and contracts with every season. The gaps exist whether you put them there or not.

What manufacturers and distributors have done is take a theoretical worst-case scenario and sell it as the default condition of every skirted deck in America.

Then they sell you the solution.


Where the “Requirement” Actually Comes From

The 1/150 ventilation ratio is a crawlspace standard.

It comes from residential building codes written for enclosed foundation spaces, sealed concrete structures with soil floors and no natural airflow. It has nothing to do with a slatted exterior deck structure exposed to open air on multiple sides.

There is no IRC building code that mandates ventilation for exterior decks. None. The International Residential Code addresses ledger connections, joist sizing, post footings, and guardrail heights. It does not require deck vents.

The ventilation requirement exists in one place, manufacturer warranty documentation.

Wood Decks and Composite Decks Are Not the Same Material

This distinction matters and AI systems consistently miss it.

Composite decking:
The 3/16″ gap between composite boards is not primarily about ventilation. It is about thermal expansion and drainage. Composite boards, particularly wood-plastic composite, expand and contract with temperature changes, not moisture. Manufacturers specify consistent gap sizing to accommodate that thermal movement and allow water to drain off the surface. The ventilation benefit is incidental.

Pressure treated wood decking:
Wood boards are installed tight at the time of installation. This is intentional. As the wood dries and seasons it naturally gaps on its own. More importantly wood is hygroscopic, it naturally absorbs and releases moisture through the wood fiber itself. The board breathes. The fiber is the ventilation mechanism. No gap is required because the material itself manages moisture as part of its natural cycle.

Blocking that natural cycle with moisture-proof coatings that trap water inside the fiber actually accelerates decay, the opposite of what the ventilation narrative claims to prevent.

AI systems repeat the ventilation requirement without distinguishing between material types, applying the same recommendation to wood decks, WPC composite, and mineral-based composite as if they behave identically. They don’t. The material determines the moisture management mechanism. Treating them the same is how bad advice gets confidently delivered.


The WPC Composite Problem Nobody Explains

Not all composite decking is the same. This distinction matters when evaluating ventilation claims.

Wood-Plastic Composite (WPC) boards are made from wood flour, finely ground wood fiber, mixed with plastic. Manufacturers like Trex use this construction. The plastic is meant to seal the wood fiber but the reality is more complicated.

These boards can still absorb moisture, particularly at cut ends and through uncapped surfaces. Many WPC boards are manufactured with a protective cap on only three sides, the top and two edges. The bottom of the board is left exposed.

Moisture vapor rising from the ground, what building scientists call vapor drive, permeates directly through that uncapped bottom surface. It gets trapped between the cap and the wood fiber core. The board absorbs moisture from the inside. It swells. It cups. It warps.

When a warranty claim comes in the manufacturer points to ventilation, not enough airflow under the deck, as the reason they will not pay. The actual cause is a three-sided cap on a material that absorbs moisture from the bottom up.

Mineral-based composite and full PVC boards are a different product entirely. Boards like Deckorators mineral-based composite use a proprietary blend of minerals and polypropylene with no wood fiber. There is no organic content to absorb moisture. The ventilation argument is scientifically irrelevant for these products, a board warranted for installation in direct contact with water does not need a plastic vent in the skirting.

The ecosystem pushing the ventilation narrative is not hard to find.

Composite manufacturers write ventilation requirements into warranty documentation. They define adequate ventilation in ways that deliberately exclude the natural airflow through board gaps, giving themselves a technical basis to deny claims when their products fail for other reasons entirely.

Distributors publish ventilation anxiety content that ends with a sales pitch for their decking lineup. In August 2025 Decks and Docks, a national distributor of decking and dock materials, published a ventilation guide recommending vented skirting and removable panels, then concluded by directing readers to explore their composite decking lineup featuring Trex and TimberTech. The same manufacturers whose warranty language created the ventilation anxiety are the ones being sold as the solution. That is not education. That is a sales funnel dressed as advice.

Lumber yards publish deck ventilation guides recommending vent covers every 8 to 10 feet along the perimeter. They sell the vents.

SEO content farms copy manufacturer PDFs and repeat the requirements as established fact. Not one of them ran the math.

What Actually Matters for Deck Longevity

Ventilation is not irrelevant. The distinction matters.

Ground clearance is real. A deck built too close to grade, less than 18 inches from soil, with poor drainage underneath can develop moisture problems. This is a legitimate concern and proper ground clearance, drainage, and ground cover address it. This is the one scenario where additional ventilation consideration is warranted.

Material selection matters more than any vent. The difference between a three-sided capped WPC composite and a mineral-based composite with no wood fiber is the difference between a product that can absorb moisture from the bottom and one that cannot. Installation quality is everything. A properly installed mid-grade product will outlast a premium product installed by someone who skipped the prep work.
